Candan struggled with alcoholism until two ladies from Alcoholics Anonymous discovered her and helped her back to sobriety. Originally from Istanbul, Turkey, Candan went on to carry the message of recovery to her own country, where alcoholism was a taboo subject and women especially were shamed into secrecy of their disease.
